Music is my everything. And for as long as I can remember it’s been that way–often a form of therapy but also, later in life a thing that supports my creative process.
Below I list the 3 songs that are particularly doing the most for me right now.
1. Vivir Mi Vida – Marc Anthony
When I’m feeling overwhelmed or really stressed by life I play this song on repeat, dance and then everything is right again. My energy is back up and I am re-centered. Initially, I had no idea what the rest of the lyrics meant and when I looked up the English translation it made perfect sense why I love the song so much.
2. Burn Out by The Cinematic Orchestra
This is the song I play every time I’m in solitude writing poetry. Where there is writing, there is this song. Poet Ekere Tallie put me on to this song a few years ago. It’s still part of my ritual.
3. Alright – Kendrick Lamar
This song became my movement work anthem after hearing it played so much at the Movement for Black Lives convening this past August. And when things get real, it still very much is.
